174 People Sadly Loose Their Lives As A Result Of Road Accidents In January 2024- NRSA

In January 2024, according to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), 174 people sadly lost their lives. During that time, there were 1,142 reported road accidents, involving 1,991 vehicles, and resulting in 1,504 casualties, including 174 deaths and 1,330 injuries.

Out of the reported accidents, around 55% (631) were considered minor, about 33% (375) were categorized as serious, and approximately 12% (136) were fatal.

Among those who tragically lost their lives, about 9% (16 individuals) were under the age of 18, while the remaining 91% (158 individuals) were adults.

During this period, there was a significantly higher number of road traffic fatalities among adults compared to children. For every ten adults killed, a child also tragically lost their life. This can be attributed to the fact that adults have more exposure to traffic incidents than children.

In 2024, there was a decrease of 7.1% in the involvement of private vehicles and a decrease of 1.4% in motorcycle-related crashes compared to the previous year.

When it comes to cycles, motorbikes were the most commonly involved, accounting for 74% (324) of all cycle-related crashes in January 2024. Tricycles made up 23% (101), while bicycles and handcarts contributed 2% (7) and 1% (3) respectively.

When examining the vehicle categories involved in crashes, it was found that motorcycles had the lowest representation among all types of vehicles.

However, considering the overall population of motorcycles, the share of motorcycle crashes is quite alarming.

The Greater Accra Region had the highest number of crashes, with 393 incidents, and ranked third in terms of fatalities, with 29 deaths.

Following closely, the Ashanti Region recorded 311 crashes and the highest number of fatalities, with 39 deaths.

In terms of crashes, the Eastern Region ranked third with 156 incidents and came in second for fatalities, with 35 deaths.
