La General Hospital project back on track – Finance Minister

Work has resumed on the La General Hospital, prompting a visit from Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who emphasized the need for swift completion.

During his inspection last Wednesday, Ofori-Atta urged contractors to expedite the reconstruction to ensure the facility is operational within a year, providing the people of La access to high-quality healthcare.

Assuring contractors of timely fund releases, the Finance Minister stated that the government had renegotiated the contract terms for the hospital reconstruction.

The 160-bed capacity hospital will maintain its design, with ongoing work focused on substructures.

Ofori-Atta revealed a project cost revision from €57 million to €50 million, aligning with government cost-cutting measures amid economic challenges.

The Finance Minister’s visit aimed to instill public confidence in the project’s timely completion.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health representative noted that work on the hospital, stalled due to challenges, would resume, with designs for the main hospital expected to be finalized by December 7, 2023.

The La General Hospital faced demolition in July 2020 due to severe structural issues. Although the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project was inaugurated in August 2020, actual construction was delayed, causing frustration among residents.
